Imagine being a hiring manager sorting through thousands of daily applications. What kind of email would you be most likely to click and open?
In today’s fast-paced environment, time constraints often limit the thorough review of each and every email. When you receive a rejection, it’s essential to understand that hiring managers may not have had the opportunity to read your application in detail. It’s possible that they only glanced at the subject line and made a decision without opening the email. Consequently, you may have received a standard rejection message like the one below:

Take a moment to rethink where you are making a mistake. In my past 12 years of experience, I’ve noticed that whenever I sent a copy-pasted subject line and cover letter, I received a rejection the following day. However, when I carefully reviewed the job description and applied with diligence, I received an interview invitation.
Let’s discuss how I improved my approach and consider where you should also focus when writing a subject line.
I’m going to share the same screenshots once more, where you can put yourself in the position of a hiring manager and consider which applicants you would select.
The subject line is most important if your inbox is filled with thousands of daily applications. You may mark a star with these subject lines if you are in the Hiring Manager’s Position. That means other applicants have already been rejected without opening an email.
Out of 7 emails, only 4 are marked here, but still, marking does not guarantee they will be opened. They might be saved for later. So, which applicants may be instantly prompted to open their emails based on their subject lines? Sharing Same Screenshots Again:
Look at all the above subject lines and go through them. Here, the winner can be Ritesh S, who wrote clearly in the subject line that he read the JD, applied through LinkedIn, and is the perfect fit for the Graphic Designer role.
Ritesh understands the hiring manager’s thoughts and the effort put into making a job post live on job portals. He carefully considers every word that the hiring manager would want to see before opening an email. Here, he comprehends how to craft a compelling subject line to ensure his application advances to the next stage.
When applying for a job, remember that the subject line is of utmost importance and needs to be attention-grabbing. A well-crafted subject line can ensure your application is seen by the hiring manager and increase your chances of receiving an interview invitation.
Here, I have researched and prepared a list of common, optimized, and clickable subject lines as examples. You can download them for reference for your job applications:
Feel free to share your thoughts and additional ideas about subject lines and your personal experiences in the comments below. I’d greatly appreciate your input!
