Starting with a story about job searching when I began my career back in 2010, I created my profile on job portals. I was really excited that I would start receiving calls and finding job opportunities. There are millions of people creating their profiles on job portals, just like me.
After creating my profile on one of the job portals, I received a call from a big MNC company. I was really excited about the opportunity to join, but I missed it due to a lack of communication and the quality of my portfolio work. However, I soon realized how I managed to secure an interview just two days after creating my profile. I’ll explain that later, but before I do, let me share another experience.
Following that initial call, I began receiving only newsletters from that job portal, urging me to apply for relevant positions. However, these were automated messages sent to everyone, resulting in intense competition among applicants clicking on those links. After about a week, the calls stopped coming, and I patiently waited for two to three months, growing increasingly upset over the lack of callbacks.
Now, let me explain how I eventually discovered the reason for not receiving any calls-
After creating my profile, I assumed the hiring manager would call me after reviewing it. However, I didn’t update my profile for a long time. I didn’t write a detailed description about myself for visitors to see and to generate calls. I failed to include a proper portfolio link, and my resume lacked substantial information. It was a complete lack of communication, with no profile updates, and more.
So, remember these pointers when you are creating your profile on job portals to get a job:
- Upload a properly designed and informative resume.
- Fill the ‘About’ section with all the searchable keywords relevant to the job you are seeking.
- Provide a summary indicating the position you are looking for and your areas of expertise.
- Use a profile photo where you are smiling with a clear and proper face.
- Regularly update your profile with minor improvements at least on a weekly basis.
